மனம்போன வாறெல்லாம் அடிப்பா ரென்னை;

அறைந்திட்டார் நான்பதறித் துடிக்க லானேன்;

Is this what life is?

Is this what Life is?
When I am heading to the stream with a pot
To fetch water,
When I am standing at the shores of the pond
To take a bath,
He will be hiding to watch me, rearing his head
Like a snake poised to strike!
If I approach him,

He will spill the cold water onto the ground
By overturning my pot
Like a fat ruffian who doesn’t even trust his wife
In a drunken rage,
He will pour out countless grudges from his heart
Jumping up and trampling me underfoot
Is this what life is?

When he wakes up in the morning
He will praise me as the “sweetest fruit”
He will speak sweet words
Like the taste of sugar candy
At the factory, he works tirelessly all day,
Spending his wages earned on that day on toddy (liquor)
In the evening, he returns home in a drunken haze,
and beats me as he pleases.
Those walking on the street, passing my house,
Would rush to save me from my plight
Is this what life is?

One day, he said, “There’s no salt in the porridge.”
“I have no money to buy it,” I replied!
He sneered, “I know your overboard moves and
Your wasteful ways, you dolled-up foolish donkey,”
He slapped me so hard that all five of his fingers
stamped themselves into my cheek.
Stunned, I trembled in shock,
Enraged at his merciless ways,
The residents around rose in anger
Is this what life is?
